We partner with suppliers who share and embrace our philosophy and commitment to complete customer satisfaction and corporate responsibility. Moreover, we pursue long-term partnerships with them to develop their expertise and contribute to local economies, as guided by the Toyota Purchasing Policy. This policy is founded on fairness, mutual benefit and trust, and good corporate citizenship:
1. Fair competition based on an open-door policy
Supporting Toyota's aim of continuously improving the supplier base and preparing for a solid foundation for the future
2. Mutual prosperity based on mutual trust
Ensuring purchasing activities are managed between equal business partners and result in even stronger interdependent relationships that nurture openness and honesty
3. Good corporate citizenship by contributing to local economies and societies
Ensuring manufacturing is further strengthened and supports the company’s vision to contribute to society, even under difficult economic conditions.
Supporting and investing in local suppliers
We are committed to giving back to the communities in which we live, work and serve. Today, we have partnerships with around 250 suppliers from more than 400 locations in 22 countries across Greater Europe. As a result, we’re proud to state that the local content of our core models in Europe is now around 90%. Toyota is currently estimated to spend up to €5 billion euros each year with suppliers based in Europe.
Social responsible practices across the supply chain
Toyota’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) extends throughout its supply chain and is neatly captured in the company’s global CSR policy and more specifically in the CSR guidelines for suppliers (introduced in 2009).
Toyota requires all goods or services supplied to the company to be in compliance with all regulations and standards applicable in the destination countries. This requirement applies to the manufacture, labelling, transportation, importation, exportation, licensing, approval or certification of goods and services. It also covers environmental matters; wages; working hours; conditions of employment; subcontractor selection; no forced and child labour; no discrimination; and occupational health and safety.
In the true spirit of Toyota’s PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act) culture, the company monitors supplier performance via a CSR assessment tool. Areas of improvement are identified and then acted on via measures such as on-site monitoring and self-assessment. To ensure the entire supply chain is considered, we’ve requested our direct partners to extend monitoring to their staff and partners.
